Simpson represented the USA previously at the 2007 Copa de las Americas Championship in Canada. He was also named to the USA squad for the 2006 World Amateur Team Championship in South Africa but missed playing because of injury. He reached the semi-finals at the 2006 US Amateur at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn.

He was a winner at the 2006 Sunnehanna Amateur in Johnstown, Pa., shooting 276 for 72 holes and beating Walker Cup teammate,Trip Kuehne, by one stroke. He also won the 2007 Azalea Amateur in Charleston, S.C., and the 2007 Southern Amateur in Pinehurst, N.C. He was a semi-finalist at the 2007 North and South Amateur in Pinehurst, N.C., and was runner-up at the 2006 Northeast Amateur in Rumford, R.I. He also played on the 2007 USA Palmer Cup team. He is in his senior year at Wake Forest University, where he is majoring in religion. He is playing in his first Walker Cup match.
