Honours are just about even as the final first-day foursomes match reaches the turn, with the USA ahead in the top two matches and GB&I with their noses in front in the remaining two encounters.
But Billy Horschel and Rickie Fowler are three up with six holes to play as the first match heads into the home straight and Lloyd Saltman and Rhys Davies will have a tough fight on their hands to turn this around.
There is also a hard time ahead for the Irish pairing of Rory McIlroy and Jonathan Caldwell who are two down with seven to play after a double bogey at the 398-yard sixth and another dropped shot at the eighth in their match against Colt Knost and Dustin Johnson.
GB&I are faring better in the third match where John Parry and David Horsey established a two-hole lead at the ninth, but have been pulled back to a one hole advantage after 10 holes by Trip Kuehne and Kyle Stanley.
In the bottom match Jamie Moul and Daniel Willett were gifted the first two holes by their American opponents Webb Simpson and Jonathan Moore when the US pair started with two bogeys. The sides then exchanged birdies at the next two holes, but a dropped shot at the fifth was costly for the home pair and their lead was down to one hole as they reached the turn.
